What is IFSC?

An IFSC or the Indian Financial System Code is an 11 digit code in alpha-numeric format to identify all the Indian Bank branches for the use of NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer), RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement), IMPS (immediate Payment Service) and CFMS (Centralised Funds Management System), developed by the RBI (Reserve bank of India).

In this 11 Alpha-numeric format code, First four characters represent bank, fifth character is default "0" left for future use and last six characters represent branch of a particular bank.

Example: In KOTAK MAHINDRA BANK LIMITED IFSC CODE - KKBK0008281, First four character represent KOTAK MAHINDRA BANK LIMITED, fifth charactor is “Zero” and last six character represent the Jayalakshmi Puram Mysore Branch of KOTAK MAHINDRA BANK LIMITED in India.

WHAT IS MICR CODE?

MICR code or Magnetic Ink Character Recognition Code is a character-recognition technology used mainly by the Indian banking industry to ease the processing and clearance of cheques. The MICR code typically includes the document-type indicator, bank code, bank account number, cheque number, cheque amount, and a control indicator. The technology allows MICR readers to scan and read the information directly into a data-collection device to process the clearance of cheques.

WHAT IS IMPS?

IMPS or Immediate Payment Service is one of the electronic funds transfer systems started in Nov.-2010 in India. IMPS offers an instant, 24X7, interbank electronic fund transfer service through mobile phones. IMPS is an emphatic tool to transfer money instantly within banks across India through mobile, internet and ATM which is not only safe but also economical both in financial and non financial perspectives. AS of now only up to Rs. 50,000 we can send through IMPS.

IMPS facility is provided by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) through its existing NFS (National Financial switch).
